Actually manufactured – designed, assembled, integrated, and tested under one roof, by a UAE-based company, in a facility built specifically for the purpose, in a Middle Eastern country that has decided it wants to be not just a consumer of space technology but a producer and eventually an exporter of it. That is what Orbitworks represents, and what it represents is a genuinely significant moment in the story of this region.

Orbitworks is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi-based Marlan Space – affiliated with the International Holding Company – and San Francisco-based Loft Orbital, a global satellite infrastructure and mission operations leader. The company inaugurated its manufacturing and integration facility in Abu Dhabi’s KEZAD economic zone, making it the first facility of its kind in the Middle East dedicated to commercial satellite production and assembly. The numbers behind the facility are not modest. It spans 50,000 square feet in total, including a 15,000-square-foot ISO-standard cleanroom where spacecraft are assembled in an ultra-clean environment designed to protect sensitive imaging payloads from even microscopic contamination. At full capacity, the facility can produce up to 50 satellites annually – roughly one per week – each weighing up to 500 kilograms.

What Is Being Built Inside the Cleanroom

The first constellation coming off the Orbitworks production line is called Altair – ten AI-enabled, multi-sensor Earth observation satellites that will form the UAE’s first domestically developed, commercially operated space fleet. Altair is not a scientific experiment or a prestige project. It is a commercial product, designed to provide governments, militaries, environmental agencies, and businesses with turn-key access to high-resolution Earth observation intelligence without requiring them to build their own satellite infrastructure, ground segments, or operations teams from scratch.

The key distinction Altair offers over traditional Earth observation programmes is speed. Legacy satellite programmes typically require customers to commit to decade-long timelines and substantial upfront capital before a single image is delivered from orbit. Altair’s multi-sensor design and Orbitworks’ integrated manufacturing and operations capability compress that timeline to months. A government or organisation that wants sovereign satellite intelligence access – whether for border monitoring, agricultural analysis, disaster response, or infrastructure assessment – can have it operational far faster than any alternative currently available in the market. The first Altair launch is scheduled for 2026, with the full constellation expected to become one of the most advanced Earth observation fleets manufactured in the Middle East by the end of the decade.

Sovereign Capability, Strategic Choice

One detail from the Orbitworks story that deserves attention is the partnership decision. The company’s leadership acknowledged that there was significant temptation to partner with a Chinese firm, citing competitive pricing and willingness to share intellectual property. The decision was made instead to partner with American company Loft Orbital – a choice that reflects both a strategic alignment with Western markets and a deliberate effort to position Orbitworks as a credible supplier to governments and organisations that require their satellite supply chains to be free of certain geopolitical entanglements. That is not a technical decision. It is a sophisticated commercial and diplomatic one, made by a company that is thinking several moves ahead about where its customers will be and what they will need from a supplier.

The UAE government is backing this ambition with serious capital. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum unveiled an AED one billion strategy – approximately 272 million US dollars – to advance the country’s role in the commercial space sector. Emirati astronauts Nora Al Matrooshi and Mohammed Al Mulla attended the Orbitworks facility launch. The UAE Space Agency chairman was present. This is not a startup operating in isolation. It is a commercial enterprise with the full weight of the country’s space ambitions behind it, building hardware that will leave Earth’s atmosphere and deliver commercial intelligence from orbit. The country that sent a mission to Mars in 2021 is now manufacturing the satellites to continue that journey. One bite at a time, as the company’s CEO puts it. But the bites are getting considerably larger.
