The Loop is one of Dubai’s most futuristic urban mobility concepts, a proposed 93-kilometre climate-controlled corridor designed to make walking, running and cycling practical throughout the year, including during Dubai’s extremely hot summer months. The concept was developed by URB and is intended to support Dubai’s broader ambition of becoming a more walkable, sustainable and connected city.

Unlike a conventional highway, The Loop is designed around people rather than cars. The proposed corridor would connect communities and important destinations through dedicated pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, with the ambition of allowing more than 3 million residents to access key services and locations by foot or bicycle. URB says the project supports Dubai’s 20-minute city vision, with a long-term goal of making walking and cycling primary modes of daily transport for more than 80% of residents by 2040.

One of the project’s defining features is climate control. Dubai’s weather can make outdoor walking and cycling difficult for much of the year, so The Loop is envisioned as an enclosed, comfortable environment that could operate year-round. The concept combines mobility with landscaping, fitness areas, leisure facilities, pocket parks and community spaces, turning transportation infrastructure into a destination in its own right.

Sustainability is another major component. The proposed system incorporates renewable-energy concepts, including kinetic energy generated from footsteps, while recycled water would be used for irrigation. The vision also includes vertical farms, green spaces and other facilities intended to support food security, wellbeing and community interaction.

The Loop is also part of a much larger mobility vision. URB says it has been incorporated into Dubai Cycle City 2040, a wider masterplan exploring more than 1,000 kilometres of connected cycling infrastructure, including elevated cycleways, bridges and links to public transport.

It is important to distinguish The Loop by URB from the separate Dubai Loop being developed with The Boring Company. The latter is an underground electric transport concept, whereas URB’s The Loop is primarily a climate-controlled walking and cycling corridor.

When realised, The Loop could represent a significant shift in Dubai’s approach to urban planning, from designing cities primarily around automobiles to creating infrastructure where walking, cycling, health, sustainability and community life are integrated into everyday mobility.
